Recap from dinner & notes from the field

Greetings from Brazil!

Our first dinner at Manuel's tavern worked surprisingly well. We all ordered from the menu, got what we wanted, and had time for an excellent presentation by Dr. Cassandra Quave (from Emory) on her expeditions in search of plants with medicinal properties. Two days later when I was transiting ATL on my way to Brazil, there was a large screen championing her new book "Plant Hunter" in the international departure terminal! Below is a photo of the event at Manuels. For those of you that attended, let me know if you liked or disliked meeting there. If it gets a general thumbs up, I'll try to schedule Saturday dinners in the future so that no one has to fight Friday traffic into and out of ATL.

A reminder of the holiday part on 17 December at the Piedmont Driving Club. IF YOU PLAN TO ATTEND Write a check to “The Explorers Club – Atlanta Chapter” and mail it (in time for arrival by 1 December) to: Matthew Levin 25 Orchard Spring Drive, SW Rome, GA 30165

The Piedmont Driving Club is a wonderful location and has a dress code stating “traditional business attire – jacket and tie for gentlemen and comparable attire for ladies is required in the Main Clubhouse after 5:00 PM.” However, some members expressed a desire to follow the ECAD directions of black-tie, dress kilt, or “native attire.” I think some are trying to use their tux enough to decrease the $$/use ratio…or to fit into it while we still can. All are welcome, but scuba gear or mountaineering attire is less desirable.

Our speaker for the evening is Dr. Al Dove. Al is VP for Science and Education at the Ga Aquarium and runs an active research program focused on whale sharks and marine conservation in general. He is an excellent speaker and someone you will enjoy meeting. It is fully appropriate to invite guests, potential members, etc. We very much look forward to an exciting and enjoyable evening. cheers, mark
